Multidisciplinary Designer

As the last project in this MA course, I hope to push myself outside of my comfort zone and try out different design practices. Although I ultimately chose to present my work through typography and publication, I also did some 3D work and painting, making it possible for my piece to communicate the concept more fluently.

Initially, I was eager to join the Morisawa Type Design Competition as I had just come off MACD 105 Compete fresh off with two awards. The type design competition brief is to design characters that symbolise the era in which they are created, reflecting the local culture through type design. This was my first idea for the final major project: to make a typeface reflecting our era. However, I chose a different route as it was hard to design typefaces, and I needed to gain prior knowledge.

I employed multiple skills I intended to use outside the project during the research process. My photography skills have always been handy; I can just pick up my camera to shoot, documenting my journey and everything I see. The other skill I learned that came in handy is 3D modelling with Blender. Never once will I see myself being able to make a 3D model. The bookbinding workshop I participated in a couple of months ago also paved the way for the Coptic stitch binding that appeared on the books.

Throughout the whole process of ideation, making, and crafts, there are many imperfections, but it is nice to see how far I can stretch my skillset to complement my design. The whole MA journey is a really transformative and inspirational experience, from a photographer/writer with little graphic design skills to someone who can come up with ideas and concepts to create a piece of design for good.
